Pathologists Assistant – Histology

About the role

The Pathologists Assistant supports accurate and timely diagnoses by independently examining, describing, dissecting, and preparing surgical specimens for histologic evaluation. The role works within CLIA, CAP, and institutional policies to ensure high‑quality specimen handling and regulatory compliance.

Key responsibilities

• Perform gross examination, description, and dissection of human surgical specimens.
• Assist with fresh tissue procurement for cytologic and ancillary studies.
• Enter and maintain accession information, test results, and documentation in laboratory information systems.
• Conduct high‑complexity laboratory testing, quality control activities, instrument calibrations, and proficiency testing.
• Monitor instruments and test systems, identify issues, and take corrective actions or escalate as needed.
• Maintain laboratory instrumentation, work areas, and ensure compliance with safety and PPE standards.
• Provide training, mentorship, and supervision to pathology residents, Pathologists’ Assistant students, and other clinical learners.

Required profile

• Master’s degree from an NAACLS‑accredited Pathologists’ Assistant program and ASCP certification‑eligible, OR a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Chemistry with training to meet ASCP Board certification qualifications.
• At least 2 years of experience as a certified Pathologists’ Assistant (PA‑ASCP).
• Diploma and/or transcripts (translated if earned outside the United States) and proof of foreign equivalency when applicable.

Required skills

• Specimen grossing and dissection techniques.
