Neighborhood Tech Helpers Outreach Associate (Part-Time)

About the role

The New York Public Library is looking for a Neighborhood Tech Helper (Outreach Associate) to support its HPD partnership for Neighborhood Tech Help (NTH). Community-based helpers give individualized coaching in introductory digital skills and help people access affordable home internet and internet-capable devices so they can become effective home internet users. The position reports to the Neighborhood Tech Help Program Coordinator in the Community Outreach and Engagement Department and is grant-funded and temporary through June 30, 2027.

Key responsibilities

• Reach target communities and build relationships through outreach events at community partners' sites and in public places such as public housing, shelters, parks, malls and recreation centers.
• Teach patrons about library programs and services, including how to get a library card.
• Assess patrons' technology access, digital skill level, connectivity needs and internet use priorities.
• Help patrons troubleshoot basic digital literacy needs and software/hardware issues.
• Advise on free or affordable home internet options, help patrons apply, and refer them to affordable computers and devices and repair resources.
• Refer patrons to other services and teach digital safety precautions.
• Take part in onboarding and skills development, track program data, keep records and report outcomes, and help maintain the NTH Playbook and referral information.
• Plan, set up equipment and attend scheduled outreach events, and work on special projects as required.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree or 1-2 years of relevant work experience.
• Demonstrated experience providing excellent customer service to diverse patrons.
• Bilingual in English and Spanish.
• Willingness to travel within NYC and flexible availability, including evenings and weekends, for a schedule of 15 hours per week.

Required skills

• Basic knowledge of current technology platforms and devices, with a willingness to learn.
• Ability to help others learn basic digital skills, including internet services, devices and common online applications.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills, attention to detail and ability to handle multiple projects.
• Knowledge of community outreach and engagement, cultural competency and excellent communication, both online and in person.
