Medication Aide Student Trainee – Michael Unit

About the role

This student trainee position provides basic administrative and clinical support within the nursing department of a correctional health facility. The role is designed to transition a student into a certified correctional medication aide through a blend of online coursework and on‑the‑job training.

Key responsibilities

• Attend 140 hours of online medication aide college courses.
• Complete daily clinical rotations, typically 4 hours of online training and 4 hours of on‑the‑job training.
• Enter and manage patient data using a computer, generate reports, and draft routine correspondence.
• Perform administrative tasks such as filing, mail handling, faxing, and typing.
• Answer phone calls and route them appropriately.
• Assist with patient activities and care as directed by the nurse manager.
• Maintain patient care areas and ensure supplies are stocked.
• Uphold patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.

Required profile

• Enrollment in a medication aide college program or willingness to enroll.
• Ability to work in a secure, prison‑based medical environment.
• Physical capacity to lift up to 50 lb and perform moderate to extreme physical effort.
• Good vision, hearing, and communication skills for accurate task execution.
• Emotional resilience to handle stress and potentially combative patients.
