Mechanical Engineer – Design & Project Coordination

About the role

HDR is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to lead the mechanical design effort on commercial and institutional projects. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure designs meet code, client expectations, and project schedules.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate the mechanical design team from schematic development through contract documents.
• Lead meetings and code‑compliance reviews with governing agencies.
• Manage workload to meet documentation deadlines and conduct on‑site work sessions with the Project Manager.
• Review mechanical drawings for interdisciplinary conflicts and produce specifications, equipment selections, and system designs.
• Handle addenda, RFIs, CPRs, and change orders, integrating approved changes into project documents.
• Provide construction contract administration and perform QA/QC on the work of junior engineers and CAD technicians.
• Support other project duties as required.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
• Experience designing mechanical systems for commercial or institutional buildings.
• Experience with architectural/engineering consulting firms.
• Commitment to HDR’s employee‑owned culture.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Experience using Trane TRACE or comparable HVAC analysis software.
• Familiarity with manufacturer selection software.
