Manufacturing Engineering Internship (Winter/Spring 2027)

About the role

PI (Physik Instrumente), LP, a manufacturer of high-precision positioning systems, offers a winter/spring 2027 Manufacturing Engineering internship in its Shrewsbury, MA office. Interns partner with manufacturing engineers to learn the processes and systems used to deliver precision instruments to customers. The internship suits students who enjoy building mechanical things and want hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment.

Key responsibilities

• Design fixtures for assembly, metrology and manufacturing to support new and existing products.
• Model and create engineering drawings in SolidWorks.
• Machine new fixtures and modify existing ones with manual equipment such as milling machines, lathes, saws and 3-D printers.
• Machining, modifying and 3-D printing parts for production use.
• Troubleshoot and support assembly, metrology, R&D and manufacturing issues, including ECR/ECO and defects and quality issues.
• Optimize and improve manufacturing and assembly processes.
• Create documentation such as assembly build procedures and in-process inspection, and upload documents to the PLM system.
• Order and organize tooling, materials and other supplies for the shop.

Required profile

• Currently enrolled full-time in an accredited college or university program, majoring in mechanical engineering or a related field.
• Legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
• Curiosity, creativity and problem-solving skills.

Required skills

• Preferred: basic understanding of milling, turning and surface grinding.
• Preferred: machine tool experience (CNC or manual machining).
• Preferred: basic understanding of mechanical systems.
• Preferred: experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks.

What we offer

• Pay of $24-26 per hour, depending on skills, experience and education.
• Monday to Friday, in the office, typically 40 hours a week with flexible hours within core business hours.
