Litigation Legal Assistant - Medical Malpractice & Elder Abuse

About the role

J&Y Law, a plaintiff-side law firm focused on medical malpractice, elder abuse, nursing home negligence and other negligence claims, is seeking an experienced Litigation Legal Assistant. The ideal candidate has a background in plaintiff-side medical malpractice, elder abuse, nursing home negligence or complex personal injury litigation and supports attorneys on medically complex, high-volume cases.

Key responsibilities

• Draft and prepare responses to interrogatories, requests for production and requests for admission, and help identify information needed to answer discovery.
• Organize medical records, billing records, facility records and incident reports, and maintain case chronologies and medical record indexes.
• Track discovery deadlines, outstanding responses and document productions, and assist with expert witness disclosures, document requests, deposition notices and subpoenas.
• Coordinate service of process, communicate with process servers, obtain proofs of service and file documents electronically.
• Calendar court hearings, depositions and mediations, and monitor litigation tasks and deadlines.
• Maintain organized electronic litigation files, help prepare pleadings and correspondence, and coordinate with clients, medical providers, experts, court reporters and opposing counsel.
• Support trial preparation, including exhibits, witness lists and document organization.

Required profile

• At least 2 years of California civil litigation experience, preferably in medical malpractice, elder abuse, nursing home negligence or complex personal injury.
• Hands-on experience with written discovery and understanding the difference between expert and lay witness opinions.
• Knowledge of basic service of process and proof of service, and familiarity with California court filing procedures and electronic filing.
• Strong attention to detail, organization and ability to prioritize multiple assignments; able to work with minimal supervision.
• Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.

Required skills

• Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat.
• Legal case management systems; Litify or similar software preferred.
• Preferred: knowledge of the California Elder Abuse and Dependent Adult Civil Protection Act and medical terminology.
