Legal Counsel - Oil & Products Trading

About the role

TotalEnergies Gas & Power North America is hiring a Legal Counsel in Houston, Texas, to provide legal support to its Oil & Products trading activities across the Americas. The role delivers timely, practical legal advice and support for crude oil, refined products and petrochemical trading businesses in a fast-paced environment.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice and support to crude oil, refined products and petrochemical trading businesses.
• Negotiate, draft and review commercial agreements such as term purchase and sale agreements, master trading agreements (including ISDA, NAESB and similar), storage and logistics agreements, NDAs and ancillary documentation.
• Ensure the appropriate application of General Terms and Conditions governing trading transactions.
• Coordinate with Credit, Tax, Operations, Shipping and Demurrage teams on commercial agreements.
• Support the Operations team in drafting, reviewing and amending spot contracts.
• Maintain term agreements, storage contracts and related documentation in contract management and document retention systems.
• Improve legal workflows, document templates, record retention and knowledge sharing, and adopt digital tools and AI-enabled tools to improve efficiency and quality.

Required profile

• J.D. degree from an accredited law school.
• 3 to 5 years of experience as in-house or external legal counsel in the United States, preferably in the oil and gas industry.
• Fluency in written and spoken English.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

Required skills

• Strong knowledge of trading agreements, logistics, shipping and risk management; ISDA experience preferred.
• Experience with legal technology, contract lifecycle management (CLM) systems, process improvement and AI-enabled productivity tools preferred.
