Lead R&D Engineer

About the role

The Lead Research & Development Engineer provides senior technical leadership while remaining hands‑on on complex mechanical and structural designs for heavy‑lift equipment. This role drives innovation, ensures technical excellence, and mentors a team of engineers and interns.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate a single engineering team, aligning work with project objectives, company standards, and safety requirements.
• Maintain active involvement in high‑complexity design, analysis, and problem‑solving, serving as the primary technical authority on critical projects.
• Improve engineering throughput by reducing rework, streamlining decision‑making, and addressing bottlenecks.
• Drive research initiatives to identify emerging technologies, materials, and best practices for next‑generation equipment.
• Act as the main liaison between the engineering team, executive leadership, and key clients, communicating status, risks, and solutions.

Required profile

• 10+ years of progressive mechanical or structural engineering experience in heavy‑lift or related industries.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license required; OSHA 10 preferred.
• Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop engineers at various experience levels.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills for cross‑functional collaboration and client engagement.

Required skills

• Mechanical design and structural analysis, including FEA, fatigue analysis, and failure‑mode assessment.
• Advanced simulation tools: ANSYS, Nastran, Abaqus, RISA‑3D.
• CAD platforms: SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor.
• Deep knowledge of cranes, hoists, hydraulic systems, and modular transport systems.
• Familiarity with industry standards: OSHA, AISC, AWS, ASME B30 Series, ANSI, ASCE‑7.
