Landscape Plans Examiner & Inspector

About the role

The Landscape Plans Examiner & Inspector ensures compliance with municipal landscaping and tree preservation ordinances. The role provides technical guidance to field inspectors, reviews development plans, and conducts on‑site inspections of new construction and renovation projects throughout Miami.

Key responsibilities

• Review construction and development plans for compliance with landscape and tree‑preservation codes.
• Inspect sites to verify conformance with ordinances, issue permits for tree removal/replacement, and enforce licensing of landscape contractors.
• Investigate complaints, coordinate prosecution of violators, and appear before the Code Enforcement Board as needed.
• Provide regulatory information to architects, contractors, attorneys, realtors, and the public.
• Document examination results in a computer system and generate compliance checklists for contractors.
• Prepare reports for municipal officials and coordinate tree‑installation projects with other departments.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in urban forestry, horticulture, arboriculture or a related field.
• Minimum three years of practical experience in urban forestry, horticulture, or arboriculture.
• Certified Arborist credential.
• Landscape Inspector’s license/certificate issued by the Landscape Inspectors Association of Florida.
• Tree‑trimming license from Miami‑Dade, Broward, or Palm Beach County.

Required skills

• Comprehensive knowledge of arboricultural and horticultural practices, especially South Florida tree species.
• Expertise in urban forestry principles and landscape code compliance.
• Ability to inspect and assess trees for size, age, health, and quality.
• Proficiency with computer‑based documentation and compliance tracking systems.
