Research Associate II

About the role

The University of Miami’s Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies seeks a Research Associate II to support the Physical Oceanography Division at the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory. The role focuses on hands‑on technical support for observational studies of ocean variability and climate impact, including preparation and execution of sea‑based field campaigns.

Key responsibilities

• Troubleshoot, repair, and assemble electromechanical systems and electronics for field hardware.
• Perform general mechanical maintenance, basic fabrication, and staging of equipment for maritime deployments.
• Support loading, unloading, and installation of instruments on research and merchant vessels.
• Drive pickup and box trucks to transport equipment between ports, requiring a valid Florida driver’s license.
• Collect high‑quality scientific data during cruises that may last up to 60 continuous days.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in a technical field with at least 2 years of related experience.
• Willingness and physical ability to spend up to 120 cumulative days per year at sea, lifting items up to 60 lb.
• Authorization to work in the United States.

Required skills

• Electromechanical assembly and maintenance using hand and power tools (drills, saws, etc.).
• Electronics troubleshooting with multimeters, power supplies, soldering, and wiring.
• Proficiency in Windows and Linux operating systems and basic programming/software development.
• Driving pickup and box trucks for equipment logistics.
