Postdoctoral Associate – Marine Biology & Fisheries

About the role

The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the University of Miami seeks a Postdoctoral Associate to advance marine mammal acoustic research across the Gulf of Mexico, North Atlantic, and Caribbean.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement signal‑processing tools for detection, classification, localization, and density estimation of marine mammal acoustic signals.
• Create underwater acoustic propagation models to assess source levels, detection ranges, and anthropogenic noise impacts.
• Quantify absolute noise levels in long‑term recordings and evaluate spatiotemporal variations.
• Manage field logistics, lead passive acoustic surveys, and communicate findings to stakeholders.

Required profile

• Ph.D. in oceanography, underwater acoustics, bioacoustics, marine biology, engineering, applied mathematics, or a related field.
• Proven experience with automated detection, classification, and localization algorithms for bioacoustic data.
• Hands‑on experience deploying and maintaining underwater acoustic hardware.

Required skills

• Proficiency with acoustic analysis software such as Matlab, R, IDL, Triton, Ishmael, XBAT Raven, and PAMGUARD.
• Strong programming skills in Matlab and R for statistical and mathematical modeling.
• Experience with machine learning, Bayesian statistics, spatial capture‑recapture, and habitat modeling (preferred).
