HVAC Chief – Steam Systems

About the role

Under the direction of the IBBR Plant Superintendent, the HVAC Chief will perform routine maintenance and planned service on large, complex commercial and industrial HVAC systems, focusing on a 700‑hp high‑pressure steam plant and associated distribution and cooling facilities.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and repair steam piping, pressure reducing stations, steam traps, condensate return units, and control valves.
• Coordinate repairs and facility renewal projects, supervising subcontractors and less‑skilled mechanics.
• Perform multi‑trade tasks including mechanical, electrical, and structural work to ensure safe laboratory operations.
• Install, troubleshoot, and program HVAC control systems, including Siemens BAS.

Required profile

• Ten years of progressive experience in HVAC, steamfitting, or related trades, with at least two years supervising journeymen.
• High school diploma or GED; Maryland HVAC journeyman’s license preferred.
• Valid Maryland Class C driver’s license and Universal EPA CFC certification.
• Ability to work at heights up to 35 ft, handle heavy equipment, and operate in hazardous environments.

Required skills

• Expertise with steam systems, condensate management, and pressure‑reducing equipment.
• Proficiency in welding, brazing, soldering, and use of precision tools (dial indicators, vernier calipers, depth micrometers).
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical specifications.
• Experience programming and diagnosing HVAC control computers.
