Horticultural Attendant – Leader

About the role

The Horticultural Attendant – Leader directs a crew of horticulture attendants, equipment operators and laborers to maintain LSU’s campus grounds and off‑site properties. The role involves working in all weather conditions, lifting up to 50 lb, and occasional weekend or after‑hours work.

Key responsibilities

• Lead a crew to maintain grounds, including power riding tractors, mowers, entrances, canals, building and tree perimeters, ensuring safety, appearance and health standards (≈75%).
• Direct or apply chemicals for weed, pest, and fertilization control, mulch beds, perform weed removal and litter cleanup (≈10%).
• Oversee irrigation work, digging, grading, drain basin cleaning and other grounds‑related tasks (≈5%).
• Fill in for a foreman, manage multiple crews, complete timesheets and related paperwork (≈5%).
• Perform additional duties as needed to support campus landscaping operations (≈5%).

Required profile

• Two years of experience or training in farming, tree/shrub care, or groundskeeping, OR twelve semester hours in plant science or landscape studies.
• Valid Louisiana Class E driver’s license; motor vehicle record check and drug screening required.
• Physical ability to lift 50 lb, work in adverse weather, and meet the position’s safety‑sensitive requirements.

Required skills

• Operating power riding tractors and mowers (≤25 HP).
• Applying chemicals for weed, pest, and fertilization control.
• Irrigation system maintenance and related ground‑work tasks.
• Valid Louisiana Class E driver’s license.
