Horticultural Attendant – Grounds Maintenance

About the role

The Horticultural Attendant provides essential labor to keep LSU grounds clean, safe, and attractive. The role involves operating hand and power equipment, applying chemicals, pruning, and performing a variety of maintenance tasks in all weather conditions.

Key responsibilities

• Operate power riding mower, string trimmer, edger, blower, hedger, and other equipment to maintain lawns, sidewalks, plazas, and building perimeters.
• Support arboriculture services by chipping limbs, hauling debris, performing chain‑saw work, pruning, and chemical spraying.
• Apply herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, and mulch; conduct weed removal and assist with ornamental planting.
• Assist with irrigation work, digging, grading, drain cleaning, and concrete repair as needed.
• Inspect and maintain mobile equipment, change mower blades and tires, and keep maintenance records.

Required profile

• One year of experience in groundskeeping, tree and shrub care, or related training; OR six semester hours in plant science or landscape studies.
• Ability to work in all weather conditions, lift 50 lb, climb ladders, and stoop/kneel for extended periods.
• Subject to drug/alcohol testing and pre‑employment physical examination.
• Valid driver’s license.

Required skills

• Operation of power riding mower (≤25 HP).
• Use of string trimmer, blower, backpack blower, sprayer, tractor, ZTR, hedger, and edger.
• Chain‑saw operation and safe pruning techniques.
• Chemical application for weed, pest, and soil management.
• Equipment inspection, blade/tire replacement, and basic preventative maintenance.
