Hazardous Cargo Specialist

About the role

The Hazardous Cargo Specialist prepares dangerous goods and hazardous materials for transport by military aircraft, civilian/commercial aircraft, vessel and ground transport. The position works closely with military personnel and civilian contractors at McMurdo station and at USAP field camps in Antarctica.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain a safe workplace and comply with ASC ESH, waste management and quality assurance requirements.
• Identify, classify, package, mark, label and document hazardous goods in line with 49CFR parts 100-185, IATA, AFMAN 24-604 and/or IMDG, and handle multi-modal shipments.
• Safely handle and store hazardous materials, pack temperature-controlled science samples for retrograde shipping, and assist the science team in packaging and labelling general cargo.
• Perform cargo movement, tracking and storage of USAP materials, and run daily prevention maintenance checks on ATO vehicles and loaders.
• Load ISO shipping containers with blocking and bracing, operate ATO vehicles safely in varying conditions, and communicate by two-way radio.
• Work rotating 9-12-hour shifts, including weekends and extra hours, and coordinate changes at any time.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED; four years of experience in inventory control, warehousing or aircraft cargo handling.
• Willingness to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods, with medical, dental, drug screening, background check and US citizenship requirements.
• Able to lift up to 40 pounds and perform heavy lifting, climbing, crawling and outdoor work in extreme cold.
• Valid US driver's license; military aircraft knowledge, USAP cargo experience and prior HazMat certification are preferred.

Required skills

• Initial HazMat training in 49CFR, IATA, IMDG and AFMAN 24-604 within 90 days of start.
• Microsoft Office 2000 and hazardous materials databases.
• Knowledge of aircraft load planning and hazardous materials transport regulations.
