Grocery Cashier (Checker)

About the role

Hy-Vee is hiring a checker (cashier) for its Grimes grocery store. The cashier provides fast, friendly service in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment, operates the cash register and handles drive-up and carry-out transactions. The position is non-exempt and reports to the District Store Director, Store Manager and Assistant Managers.

Key responsibilities

• Greet customers, learn their names and help them find products, load or unload heavy items and pass on their requests.
• Answer the telephone promptly and work with co-workers to keep the store pleasant.
• Scan products, redeem coupons and food stamps, issue rain checks, process cash, checks and credit cards, figure discounts, count back change and issue receipts.
• Package goods, follow local, state and federal rules on tobacco, liquor and lottery tickets, and comply with WIC and food stamp guidelines.
• Stock, face and rotate merchandise, clean shelves, read shelf tags and know where items are located.
• Review the weekly store ad for price changes and sales, keep the register area clean and verify register balances at the start and end of shifts.
• Handle returned merchandise, give cash refunds or direct customers to the right person, and follow sanitation and hygiene policies.
• Report to work on time and assist with displays, decorations and other store tasks as needed.

Required profile

• No education or experience required.
• Able to follow written or verbal instructions and to do arithmetic with fractions, decimals and percentages.
• Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and 10 pounds constantly; vision from less than 20 inches to more than 20 feet with or without correction.
• Working conditions include temperature extremes, dampness, and possible hazards from pallet jacks, electrical shock and chemicals.

Equipment used includes cash registers, pallet jack, box cutter, forklift, calculator, telephone, intercom and copier. Employment is contingent on a pre-employment drug screen.
