Food and Agriculture Assistant

About the role

The International Rescue Committee is seeking a Food and Agriculture Assistant to support daily operations at its New Roots Farm in the Bronx and garden site in Queens. Working closely with the Food and Agriculture Coordinator, you will help maintain the sites, engage the community, and assist with production and outreach activities.

Key responsibilities

• Perform site maintenance tasks such as weeding, watering, trash collection, and organizing tool sheds and greenhouse spaces.
• Develop crop plans, create planting schedules, and manage shared/public areas.
• Coordinate daily activities with community members, volunteers, interns, and garden members.
• Support seed saving initiatives and maintain the garden’s seed library.
• Implement natural pest‑management strategies and assist with harvest and distribution.
• Conduct community outreach, build partnerships, and support market and CSA programs.
• Track project metrics in Excel or Farming Concrete and enter data into the IRC Efforts to Outcomes database.
• Supervise market stewards, land stewards, apprentices, and volunteers.
• Assist with additional New York Resettlement programming such as health‑wellness workshops.

Required profile

• Passion for food sovereignty, food justice, and community‑based agriculture.
• Ability to perform physical farm work, including lifting and outdoor tasks.
• Experience working with diverse community groups, volunteers, or interns.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data tracking and reporting.
