Electrical Designer - Substations (Power & Energy)

About the role

Atwell, a consulting, engineering and construction firm serving real estate, land development and energy markets, is looking for an experienced Electrical Designer, Substation to support its Power & Energy team. The role covers both physical design and protection & controls (P&C) on utility, renewable interconnection and power delivery projects, from layout and equipment arrangement through schematics, wiring and construction support.

Key responsibilities

• Support the design of physical and P&C drawing packages for new and existing substation projects
• Prepare and revise general arrangement drawings, plan and section views, equipment layouts, grounding plans, conduit and cable plans, control building layouts and material take-offs
• Develop P&C deliverables including one-lines, three-lines, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, relay wiring, cable schedules and interconnection details
• Coordinate with engineers, project managers and other design staff to keep deliverables accurate and aligned with project scope and client standards
• Support projects from conceptual design through detailed design and construction issue packages
• Review markups, incorporate design changes and maintain drawing quality and code compliance
• Work with multidisciplinary teams and support construction and field activities, including as-builts and drawing updates

Required profile

• Associate's degree, technical certification or equivalent hands-on design experience in electrical drafting/design
• Minimum 3+ years of substation design experience; exposure to both physical and P&C work preferred
• Experience preparing substation design packages (layouts, sections, grounding, conduit, cable routing, schematics, wiring diagrams, panel details)
• Understanding of substation equipment such as transformers, breakers, switches, bus arrangements, relay panels, control houses and cable systems
• Familiarity with utility, renewable interconnection and/or high-voltage substation projects preferred

Required skills

• Proficiency in AutoCAD (MicroStation is a plus)
• Ability to support both physical layout/design and P&C drafting across project phases
