Director, Obesity and Metabolic Diseases

About the role

The Director, Obesity and Metabolic Diseases will provide scientific leadership and people management for discovery research in obesity and metabolic diseases within the Cardiometabolic Disease Department at our Research Laboratories in South San Francisco, California.

Key responsibilities

• Lead discovery research from target identification through preclinical candidate nomination, integrating human biology, translational science, disease models, and emerging technologies.
• Provide scientific leadership across chemistry, pharmacology, safety, translational medicine, biomarker, and development functions to inform priorities and advance programs.
• Identify and advance novel therapeutic opportunities using insights from human genetics, clinical research, biomarker science, and the competitive landscape.
• Lead a high‑performing scientific team, fostering innovation, rigor, collaboration, and talent development.
• Contribute to evaluation of external innovation, business development, and partnership strategies.
• Represent the team through publications, presentations, due‑diligence activities, and cross‑functional scientific forums.

Required profile

• Ph.D., M.D., or Ph.D./M.D. in a relevant scientific discipline with at least eight years of experience in obesity, diabetes, MASH, or related therapeutic areas.
• Demonstrated track record of scientific innovation, leadership of research programs, and contributions to basic and/or translational research.
• Deep expertise in metabolic disease biology, target validation, human genetics, and biomarker integration.
• Proven success leading scientific teams in a matrix environment, managing priorities and influencing cross‑functional stakeholders.
• People‑leadership experience including coaching, mentorship, performance management, and succession planning.
