Digital and Print Content Writer

About the role

A contractor is needed to produce high-quality digital and print content, including articles, fact sheets, blogs, white papers, press releases, web pages and policy summaries. The work translates complex scientific and technical concepts into plain language, checks facts with subject-matter experts and complies with the Plain Writing Act of 2010 and Section 508 accessibility requirements. The position is on-site in Alexandria, Virginia.

Key responsibilities

• Write and edit articles, white papers, fact sheets, blogs, press releases, web pages and other publications on science topics of stakeholder interest, including sensitive or controversial ones.
• Translate complex scientific and technical concepts into plain language for non-expert audiences.
• Draft and edit web content summarizing policies and guidance for proposers and awardees.
• Research and fact-check, working with OLPA staff, program officials and scientists.
• Ensure all products meet the Plain Writing Act of 2010 and Section 508 accessibility standards.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 years of professional writing and editing experience; experience writing about science and technology preferred.
• Experience writing for federal agencies, scientific funders or research-focused organizations preferred.
• Experience with short- and long-form content such as press releases, fact sheets, blogs, reports and webpages.
• Ability to turn complex scientific topics into clear, compelling language for diverse audiences.
• Bachelor's degree (journalism, communications or a science-related field) and/or certifications preferred.
• Ability to pass a public trust security investigation required.

Required skills

• AP Style, plain language writing and editing for scientific accuracy.
• Familiarity with the Plain Writing Act of 2010 and Section 508 compliance.
• Knowledge of SEO and answer engine optimization (AEO).
• Research and fact-checking using written sources and interviews with subject-matter experts.

Candidates must submit two writing samples. The salary range is $80,000 to $87,660 per year.
