Contingent Animal Relocation Driver

About the role

The ASPCA's Animal Relocation team transports more than 35,000 dogs and cats each year between source shelters and destination shelters. This is a temporary, contingent position filled by a driver who drives ASPCA-owned vehicles and cares for animals on the move. The role is hired through a third-party staffing agency, with a target pay of $25 per hour. Candidates may be based anywhere in the U.S., with preference for Dallas, Philadelphia, Chattanooga, St. Louis and Kansas City.

Key responsibilities

• Load and unload dogs and cats, examine them for illness or injury, triage the load and provide care and spot cleaning
• Communicate with ASPCA veterinarians, shelter staff and volunteers, and liaise with the ASPCA manager
• Stock vehicles and storage with supplies, clean and disinfect vehicles, cages and carriers, and assist with minor repairs
• Handle paperwork, fleet cards and receipts, and complete maintenance logs
• Check in and out of high-value equipment, inspect vehicles daily, park and maneuver them, and use provided PPE
• Work remotely with attention to detail, following written protocols

Required profile

• Located within an hour of a major airport and able to travel to vehicle pickup points
• Five or more years of driving experience, valid driver's license and a clean motor vehicle record
• Able to drive eight hours in shifts and stay on the road up to sixteen hours at a time, including weekends
• High school diploma; one or more years of professional animal handling (additional experience preferred)
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, bend, crouch and kneel, and work in bad weather
• English required

Required skills

• Basic computer skills; familiarity with an iPad and iPhone preferred
• Comfortable working in Adobe, Excel and cloud-based document sharing platforms
