Child Life Specialist

About the role

The Child Life Specialist provides psychosocial and developmental support to pediatric patients and children of adult patients across multiple care settings at Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital. Working as part of an interdisciplinary team, the specialist helps families navigate illness, procedures, and hospitalization.

Key responsibilities

• Assess developmental, emotional, and cultural needs of assigned pediatric population and deliver therapeutic play and preparation.
• Provide education, relaxation techniques, and non‑pharmacological pain management to reduce anxiety.
• Organize diversional activities in playrooms and bedside, manage supplies and inventory.
• Supervise and orient child‑life students, volunteers, and interns.
• Participate in interdisciplinary meetings, special events, and program committees.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Child Life or related field with at least 600 hours of approved internship.
• Professional certification (CCLS) within one year of hire and maintenance thereafter.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within one year of hire.
• Ability to work PRN shifts, float to multiple locations, and meet physical demands.

Required skills

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Child Life Council certification (CCLS).
