Calltaker / Dispatcher in Training

About the role

Assist Ambulance, a New York City EMS agency serving the five boroughs, is looking for EMTs to join its Communications Department as a calltaker/dispatcher in training. The dispatch team works 24/7 to coordinate calls, and this position suits an EMT with telecommunications experience who wants to learn dispatching.

Key responsibilities

• Take a high volume of non-emergency medical transport calls and emergency calls for hospitals, skilled rehab facilities, long-term care centers, urgent care centers and community paramedicine calls, including interfacility STAT transfers.
• Support EMTs, MVOs, paramedics, supervisors and directors through telemetry, radio, GPS services and tracking software.
• Help with daily operations by coordinating crew members, buses, supplies, troubleshooting and equipment.
• Learn dispatching alongside experienced dispatchers and calltakers who report to the Director of Communications.

Required profile

• One year of call-taking experience or a comparable customer service role.
• Active NY State EMT card.
• Ability to pass a 10-panel drug screening including THC.
• Scheduling is currently TBD based on applications.

Required skills

• Proactive communication and teamwork experience.
• Motivation to learn dispatching in a high-stress environment.
• Attention to detail and multitasking.
• Plus: experience with electronic medical records, medical billing, data entry or insurance portals.

What we offer

• Paid training after completing it and moving into employment.
• Paid sick time and PTO up to 56 hours per year, plus 32 hours unpaid and 20 hours prenatal.
• Vacation: 40 hours at 1 year, 80 hours at 3 years, 120 hours at 6 years.
