Billing Specialist I

About the role

The Billing Specialist I supports Phelps Health Hospital by managing insurance claims, processing patient accounts, and ensuring accurate billing practices. This position reports to the Billing Supervisor and plays a key part in the hospital’s revenue cycle.

Key responsibilities

• Enter patient, insurance, and ID information for claim submission.
• Submit claims electronically or via paper UB04/CMS-1500 forms.
• Answer patient inquiries regarding copays, deductibles, and write‑offs.
• Follow up on unpaid or rejected claims and re‑submit as needed.
• Prepare appeal letters for denied claims and gather supporting documentation.
• Perform soft collections for past‑due patient accounts.
• Verify patient eligibility, benefits, and managed‑care authorizations.
• Prepare and submit secondary claims after primary insurer processing.

Required profile

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Medical billing experience preferred.
• Familiarity with billing software and electronic data submission preferred.

Required skills

• Knowledge of HIPAA guidelines for handling patient information.
• Ability to communicate clearly with patients and insurance representatives.
