Backend Software Engineer (Rust)
Lorum · New York
Job description
About the role
Lorum is a clearing and treasury infrastructure company founded in 2023, which has grown 55x in 2025 and is applying for a U.S. national trust bank charter. It is looking for an experienced backend engineer to join a small, cross-functional team in New York and help build its foundational infrastructure. The role suits someone who enjoys fast-moving environments, thrives in ambiguity and wants to build high-quality backend systems, with a particular interest in distributed systems and Rust. The position is in the office three days a week.
Key responsibilities
- Design, build and maintain backend services and APIs in Rust (or similar languages with a path to Rust), implementing domain logic for clearing, payments, accounts and reconciliation.
- Take part in architectural decisions and evolve service boundaries and integrations.
- Build systems for high-volume, high-reliability financial workloads, with metrics, logs and tracing, and take part in on-call and incident response.
- Work with Security and GRC teams on security and compliance (e.g. SOC 2, ISO 27001), secure coding, authentication and authorization, and internal documentation.
- Partner with Product Managers, break projects into tasks, review code and help maintain engineering standards.
- Write unit, integration and property-based tests, support CI/CD, contribute to tooling and share knowledge.
Required profile
- 3+ years of experience building backend systems in a strongly typed language such as Rust, Go, Java, Kotlin or C++.
- Commercial experience in backend or systems engineering on distributed services or APIs.
- Genuine interest in working with Rust day to day; prior Rust experience or demonstrable learning is important.
- Solid understanding of concurrency, data modelling, transactions, reliability and observability.
- Experience designing and consuming APIs (REST/gRPC/GraphQL) and integrating with other services and data stores.
- Strong testing mindset, CI/CD familiarity, clear communication and collaboration with Product, Operations and other engineers.
Nice-to-haves
- Rust in production or substantial personal/OSS projects.
- Fintech, payments, banking or trading experience.
- Event-driven architectures, message queues, stream processing, PostgreSQL, AWS/GCP, Docker/Kubernetes, and regulated environments.
What we offer
- Flexible vacation policy, private healthcare and employee stock ownership (ESOP).
- Flexible working and autonomy.
- Two annual "pay it forward" days for volunteering and three wellness days per quarter.
