Attorney 3 – Public Defender

About the role

The Oconee Judicial Circuit Public Defender's Office is hiring an Assistant Public Defender 3 to handle serious felony cases across multiple counties. This position may serve as a lead attorney on high‑profile matters, requiring strong advocacy, legal judgment, and a commitment to public defense.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate daily work of assigned co‑workers.
• Represent clients in all court stages, including arraignments, pre‑trial hearings, sentencing, appeals, and post‑conviction proceedings.
• Prepare and argue motions, conduct jury selection, deliver opening and closing statements, present evidence, and cross‑examine witnesses.
• Review discovery, interview clients and witnesses, subpoena experts, and develop defense theories and case strategies.
• Negotiate plea deals, secure mitigating evidence, and advocate for client services.

Required profile

• Juris Doctorate from an accredited institution and a Georgia Bar license (or eligibility to obtain within one year).
• Minimum three years of criminal defense experience.
• Excellent written and oral communication, strong interpersonal skills, and high ethical standards.
• Ability to plan staff work, make sound decisions, and handle uncertain situations.

Required skills

• Proficiency in legal research and case documentation.
• Knowledge of Georgia statutes, federal and state laws, and local criminal codes.
• Experience preparing briefs, motions, and trial exhibits.
