About the role
The Frost School of Music at the University of Miami seeks a full‑time Assistant Professor of Practice in Contemporary Guitar to begin in the 2026‑27 academic year. The role involves teaching guitar instruction, directing live and recording ensembles, and delivering musicianship courses for sophomore and junior students.
Key responsibilities
- Teach Contemporary Guitar lessons (electric and acoustic) to undergraduate students.
- Direct live and recording ensembles focused on original music.
- Teach sophomore and junior level musicianship skills courses.
- Participate in juries, auditions, and student recruiting activities.
- Potentially oversee live sound for rehearsals and performances.
Required profile
- Demonstrated expertise in contemporary/popular music pedagogy for guitar.
- Experience teaching non‑traditional musicians.
- Strong songwriting, multi‑genre improvisation, and arranging abilities.
- Master’s degree or higher in music (terminal degree preferred); equivalent professional experience may be considered.
- Collegiate classroom teaching experience is highly desirable.
Required skills
- Electric and acoustic guitar performance.
- Songwriting, improvisation, and arranging.
- Notation software: Sibelius, Dorico, MuseScore.
- Audio recording and editing using DAWs: Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Ableton Live.
- Live sound operation for rehearsals and performances.
