Assistant Nurse Manager - Acute Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery

About the role

The Assistant Nurse Manager supports the Nurse Manager on the 4200 Acute Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery unit at Akron General Medical Center. This high‑acuity unit cares for post‑open‑heart surgery patients, vascular and lung surgery cases, and complex cardiac conditions. The role focuses on leadership, patient safety, and workflow optimization during night shifts.

Key responsibilities

• Support the Nurse Manager in supervising RN caregivers and nursing support staff.
• Drive unit OKRs, ensure fall precautions, lead huddles, and conduct inpatient rounding.
• Provide alarm management education and optimize workflow, including dialysis patient scheduling.
• Interview, hire, train, and evaluate caregivers; make personnel action recommendations.
• Supervise admissions, assess patient needs, develop nursing care plans, and document patient progress.
• Assist in developing and implementing unit policies, procedures, and quality improvement projects.
• Serve as liaison between management, staff, and other organizational areas to resolve care delivery issues.
• Prepare work schedules to ensure adequate coverage and participate in committees and continuing education programs.

Required profile

• Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited program.
• Current Ohio RN license.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (or ALS) upon hire or within first year.
• Minimum two years of recent clinical nursing experience, preferably in cardiac or critical care settings.
• Strong clinical knowledge, analytical and organizational skills.
