Airport Design Engineer (Civil Engineer IV)

About the role

The State of Illinois, Department of Transportation, Division of Aeronautics / Bureau of Airport Engineering, is hiring four Airport Design Engineers (Civil Engineer IV) in Springfield, IL. The position is the primary point of contact for coordinating, reviewing and developing construction plans and specifications for airport improvement projects funded under the federal Airport Improvement Program (AIP). It works closely with airport sponsors and consultants and reviews designs to ensure projects conform to state and federal guidance so they remain eligible for funding.

Key responsibilities

• Review all Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) submittals for scope and cost estimates to ensure their accuracy and adequacy for later project development.
• Conduct pre-design and special coordination meetings.
• Provide guidance to consulting engineers during the design of airport projects.
• Review and approve the engineering report before it proceeds.
• Assist sponsors with local letting of projects using local procurement guidance.
• Ensure projects are developed efficiently and economically in line with the scope and budget.

Required profile

• Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis; the State does not sponsor employment visas.
• Bilingual skills are welcome.
• This is a union position, so the collective bargaining agreement applies.

What we offer

• Anticipated starting salary of $6,281 per month, with a range of $6,281 to $9,792 per month.
• Full-time, salaried position with anticipated hybrid work, 1 to 5 days per week in the office depending on operational needs.
• Work hours 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday to Friday.
