Civil Engineer Trainee - District 6

About the role

The State of Illinois, Department of Transportation, is hiring a Civil Engineer Trainee for District 6 in Springfield, IL. The position is accountable for the inspection, documentation and safety of highway improvements during the construction phase, and may also perform general studies and plans work in the winter months. It is a full-time, salaried union position with 10 vacancies.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure accurate and thorough inspection and documentation of assigned construction projects.
• Perform general studies and plans work during the winter months.
• Maintain a harmonious working relationship with contractors, property owners, utility companies and the public.
• Perform all duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.
• Perform all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited college (including those expecting to graduate within 12 months), with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0, OR
• A current Illinois Engineer Intern Certificate, OR
• A current Professional Engineer license in Illinois, OR
• A current Structural Engineer license in Illinois.

What we offer

• Anticipated starting salary of $4,631 per month, with a full range of $4,631 to $6,323 per month.
• Hybrid schedule: 1 to 5 days per week in the office, depending on operational needs.
• Work hours 7:00 to 3:30, Monday to Friday.
