Advanced Practice Provider – Acute Care Cardiothoracic Surgery

About the role

The Cleveland Clinic Department of Regional Cardiothoracic Surgery is seeking full‑time Physician Assistants or Nurse Practitioners to join the team at Mercy Hospital. You will work primarily in the cardiac operating room, providing first‑assist support and managing pre‑ and post‑operative patient care.

Key responsibilities

• Assist surgeons in thoracic procedures, including endoscopic and open vein/arterial harvest.
• Perform first‑assist duties in the cardiac OR and manage chest tubes, IABPs, and pacing wires.
• Conduct pre‑operative patient consultations and write post‑operative progress notes.
• Participate in medical team rounds and collaborate with multidisciplinary staff.

Required profile

• National certification as a Physician Assistant (NCCPA) or Nurse Practitioner with Acute Care certification.
• Graduates of an A.R.C. approved PA program or equivalent NP program.
• Ability to obtain credentialing and privileging by the Medical Executive Committee.
• Strong analytical, communication, and decision‑making skills.

Required skills

• First‑assist experience in cardiac and thoracic surgery (preferred).
• Proficiency with endoscopic and open vessel harvest techniques.
• Knowledge of BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, or ATLS certifications.
• Ability to use electronic medical record systems.
