Accounting Specialist - Fiscal Services

About the role

San Jose Unified School District is hiring a full-time Accounting Specialist for its Fiscal Services Department. The specialist manages, analyzes and reconciles financial data that informs payroll, budgeting and financial decisions, ensuring funds are allocated properly, reports are accurate and programs stay compliant with policies and regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts and post financial transactions
• Collect, analyze and reconcile fiscal records and reports
• Complete audits, analyses, schedules and reports to meet compliance requirements
• Support budget development, revenue and expenditure forecasting
• Support payroll and retirement processes
• Review and approve expenditures such as invoices, reimbursements and timesheets
• Interpret and apply laws, policies and regulations
• Help sites and departments use funds and resources properly
• Train or support others on fiscal processes or systems as assigned

Required profile

• Analytical, detail-driven professional with a strong understanding of accounting principles
• Intermediate knowledge of Excel functions such as pivot tables, VLOOKUP and formulas
• Comfortable working independently, interpreting financial data and solving complex problems
• Sound judgment, ability to manage competing priorities and clear communication with stakeholders
• Ability to navigate regulations and support others in understanding fiscal processes
• 4-year degree in finance, accounting or business administration, or equivalent experience and education
• Resume and cover letter; must pass the San Jose Unified assessment and be in good evaluation standing

What we offer

• Pay of $35.78 per hour
• Free medical and dental coverage for employees working at least 0.75 FTE (30 hours per week)
• 21 vacation days and 11 paid holidays for 10-month employees (27 vacation days and 13 holidays for 12-month employees)
