About the role
The Ablebodied Seaman works on the deck department of a training vessel at Texas A&M Maritime Academy. The role involves standing watches, performing routine deck maintenance, and supporting safety and emergency equipment operations.
Key responsibilities
- Stand wheel, anchor, gangway and roving watches, maintaining course and communicating navigational orders.
- Perform day‑worker duties such as chipping, scraping, priming, painting, and cleaning of hull, decks, superstructure, cargo gear, lifeboats, and damage‑control equipment.
- Inspect, maintain, and operate lifesaving, damage‑control, and emergency equipment.
- Assist with launching lifesaving gear and conduct security inspections of the ship.
- Support training and maintenance programs for deck cadets under supervision of senior deck officers.
Required profile
- High school diploma or equivalent training/experience.
- Previous experience aboard ocean or inland vessels.
- Ability to lift moderately heavy objects and work in confined spaces, on ladders, and in all weather conditions.
Required skills
- Active AB Special license or higher.
- U.S. Coast Guard approved Adult CPR and Basic First Aid (current).
- TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential).
- Qualified Lifeboat man certification.
- STCW with RFPNW endorsement.
- Current USCG medical certification and passport.
