About the role
The Youth Program Specialist implements youth‑focused programs that help immigrant and refugee youth adjust, thrive, and succeed in their new communities. Working primarily with the Virginia Refugee School Achievement Project (VRSAP) and Mentoring Youth in Virginia (MYVA), the role builds strong relationships with schools, families, and community partners. This fixed‑term position runs until September 30, 2026.
Key responsibilities
- Coordinate services for refugee children and their parents in partnership with local school systems to promote regular attendance and participation.
- Orient newly arrived families to the U.S. public‑school system and relevant family‑law issues, increasing parent‑school interaction.
- Conduct pre‑ and post‑tests to assess families’ understanding of school attendance and participation requirements.
- Advocate for children experiencing abuse or neglect and refer them to appropriate partner agencies.
- Work with parents to secure special‑education assessments and services for eligible students.
- Support parents in participating in school activities and assist schools in meeting language and cultural needs.
- Develop and maintain relationships with local school districts, students, parents, and other stakeholders.
Required profile
- Passionate, solutions‑driven change‑maker with experience serving immigrant or refugee youth.
- Strong knowledge of the U.S. public‑school system and related family‑law considerations.
- Excellent communication, advocacy, and relationship‑building abilities.
- Ability to work collaboratively with schools, families, and community partners.
