About the role
An exciting career in wildland firefighting awaits you with the Georgia Forestry Commission. You will work outdoors in high‑adrenaline emergency environments, protecting Georgia’s forest resources and responding to fire incidents.
Key responsibilities
- Assist with maintaining buildings, grounds, and equipment.
- Control and extinguish fires using manual and power equipment.
- Operate fire engines, hose lays, and commercial‑class transport vehicles.
- Operate medium to heavy‑duty crawler tractors for fire suppression and fire‑break construction.
- Inspect property for compliance with fire‑related laws and regulations.
- Prepare reports and conduct fire‑prevention campaigns.
- Participate in a rotating on‑call schedule for after‑hours and weekend emergencies.
Required profile
- Valid CDL learner’s permit (or license) with ability to obtain a CDL within 12 weeks of hire.
- Pass the Moderate Work Capacity Test (2‑mile hike with 25‑lb pack) and annual physical fitness testing.
- Reside within 45 minutes of the Elberton work location.
- Ability to work any shift, including weekends and holidays, and respond to on‑call duties.
Required skills
- Class A CDL operation.
- Operation of fire engines and hose lays.
- Operation of heavy equipment, including crawler tractors.
- Use of fire‑suppression and prevention equipment.
