Wildland Firefighter / Ranger – Georgia Forestry Commission

About the role

An exciting career in wildland firefighting awaits you. You will work outdoors in high‑adrenaline emergency‑response situations, protecting Georgia’s forest resources as part of the Georgia Forestry Commission’s elite workforce.

Key responsibilities

• Live or relocate within 45 minutes of the Brooks County unit in Barney, GA.
• Receive training and instruction in fire control duties using heavy equipment.
• Assist with maintaining buildings, grounds and equipment.
• Control and extinguish fires using manual and powered equipment.
• Operate fire engines, hoselays, commercial class transport and medium‑to‑heavy duty crawler tractors.
• Inspect property for compliance with laws, codes and regulations.
• Prepare reports and conduct fire‑prevention campaigns.
• Respond to fire calls, accidents and other emergencies, including on‑call duty after hours.

Required profile

• Valid Class A CDL learner’s permit (or ability to obtain a CDL within 12 weeks of hire).
• Pass pre‑employment background, medical evaluation and physical fitness tests.
• Successfully complete the Moderate Work Capacity Test (2‑mile hike with 25‑lb pack) and annual fitness assessments.
• Physical ability to work in steep terrain, heat, smoke and high altitudes.

Required skills

• Class A CDL operation.
• Commercial vehicle and heavy equipment (crawler tractor) operation.
• Fire engine and fire suppression equipment use.
• Construction of fire lines and pre‑suppression fire breaks.
