Tool Designer

About the role

Moog is seeking a Tool Designer to create 3D models and 2D schematics for custom manufacturing products such as molds, fixtures, and tools. The role works onsite in Blacksburg, VA, collaborating closely with manufacturing engineers and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Create 3D models and 2D drawings for tooling using CAD software.
• Partner with Manufacturing Engineers to design, implement, and improve tooling.
• Select optimal materials based on durability, heat resistance, machinability, and cost.
• Generate Bills of Materials (BOMs) for each tool.
• Maintain and control tool drawings and engineering documentation.
• Analyze production and tooling issues and implement corrective solutions.
• Assist in training and cross‑training of team members.

Required profile

• HS diploma or GED.
• At least 3 years machine shop experience or 2 years as a Tool Designer, or equivalent technical education.
• Quality‑conscious with strong mechanical aptitude and dexterity.
• Self‑starter able to work independently and take initiative.
• Strong teamwork orientation and ability to collaborate across the organization.
• Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
• Willingness to travel internationally once per year.

Required skills

• Proficiency with CAD software for 3D modeling and 2D drafting.
• Experience with 3D printing technologies (plus).
