Software Engineer - Ruby

About the role

tastytrade is looking for a Software Engineer who will help build and maintain the technology powering its retail brokerage business. You will work primarily in Ruby while collaborating with teams that use Java, JavaScript and other modern tools. The role is hybrid, with three days a week in the Chicago office.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain services in a distributed architecture, considering failure modes, latency and data consistency.
• Modify existing systems, own current services, and lead green‑field projects.
• Provide guidance and code reviews for junior engineers.
• Write comprehensive automated tests and contribute to lightweight infrastructure work.
• Translate requirements into production‑quality code with minimal supervision.

Required profile

• At least 2 years of professional experience with Ruby or an equivalent object‑oriented language (e.g., Java) and a commitment to work primarily in Ruby.
• Experience building or operating distributed systems.
• Strong problem‑solving ability and willingness to learn new languages, frameworks or technologies.
• Accountability, ownership of work and proactive communication.
