Ramp Tower Controller

About the role

The Ramp Tower Controller ensures safe, efficient, and expeditious ground movement of aircraft and vehicles on the ramp and taxi lanes at Washington Dulles International Airport. The role involves coordinating with the FAA, airlines, and other airport departments.

Key responsibilities

• Direct aircraft movement in the midfield ramp area in compliance with the Dulles Airport Surface Operations Letter of Agreement.
• Approve push‑back requests, give taxi instructions, and assign remote parking areas.
• Dispatch mobile lounges/plane‑mates to transport passengers safely.
• Monitor safety hazards, report incidents, and follow emergency procedures.
• Maintain logs, records, and coordinate preventive maintenance for mobile lounges.

Required profile

• Four years of progressive experience controlling aircraft movements at a major airport, or FAA/US Military controller certification, or pilot qualification, or an AT‑CTI degree.
• High school diploma or GED; valid state driver’s license.
• Ability to work shifts, weekends, holidays, and be on call 24/7 for essential services.

Required skills

• Computer proficiency and experience with computerized work‑order and time‑and‑attendance systems.
• FAA Certified Air Traffic Controller or Control Tower Operator (CTO) certificate.
• Knowledge of ground control procedures at a large hub airport.
