Purchasing Agent

About the role

Highway Machine Co., a family-owned custom manufacturer founded in 1921, is looking for a detail-oriented Purchasing Agent to join its Princeton, Indiana team. The role supports manufacturing operations by buying raw materials, components, supplies and outside services, working closely with the Purchasing Manager, production, inventory, quality and engineering departments.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Purchasing Manager with sourcing and purchasing materials, components, supplies and outside services
• Request and evaluate supplier pricing, availability, lead times and other purchasing information
• Issue purchase orders and keep accurate purchasing data in the company's ERP/MRP system
• Monitor open purchase orders and follow up with suppliers to support on-time delivery
• Maintain good relationships with suppliers and vendors, and help evaluate supplier performance
• Work with Quality on material non-conformance and quality concerns, and with production, inventory and engineering on material requirements
• Identify ways to reduce costs, improve lead times and increase efficiency, and support inventory and material planning
• Help with continuous improvement of purchasing and supply chain processes, and follow company purchasing procedures

Required profile

• Attention to detail, strong organization and ability to manage multiple priorities
• Effective communication, follow-through and analytical problem-solving skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, make ethical decisions and keep confidential information
• Willingness to learn manufacturing processes, materials and purchasing requirements
• Authorized to work in the United States

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Excel
• Preferred: experience with ERP/MRP systems, supplier negotiations, cost analysis or vendor management
• Preferred: degree in a business or supply chain field, and purchasing or supply chain experience in a manufacturing environment
