Public Works Laborer – Streets Department

About the role

The Street Laborer performs a variety of skilled and semi‑skilled tasks in maintenance, construction, and repair of city streets, sidewalks, curbs, and related infrastructure. This safety‑sensitive position is authorized to operate city vehicles and equipment while providing courteous service to the public.

Key responsibilities

• Operate pneumatic and hand tools, light equipment, and trucks; clean and maintain all equipment.
• Mix, compile, and apply construction materials such as cement, asphalt, and storm‑drain pipe components.
• Construct forms, lay and finish cement, dig ditches, backfill trenches, and install storm‑drain systems.
• Repair and replace concrete and asphalt surfaces, perform hot‑patching, sealing, and surface shoring.
• Set up and remove traffic warning devices and barricades for safe traffic control.
• Maintain roadway cleanliness by trimming weeds, picking up litter, and keeping medians clear.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED and a valid Texas driver’s license.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor, lift up to 100 lb, and work in extreme weather conditions.
• Two years of maintenance or construction experience preferred.

Required skills

• Operation of pneumatic and hand tools.
• Operation of light equipment and trucks.

• Installation of storm‑drain pipes and related street infrastructure.
