Ophthalmic Assistant

About the role

The Ophthalmic Assistant provides preliminary ocular assessments, assists with diagnostic testing, and supports ophthalmologists and optometrists in delivering patient care within Lehigh Valley Health Network.

Key responsibilities

• Assist with appointments, telephone screening, and communicate prescription refills with pharmacies.
• Perform basic slit lamp examinations, ocular motility testing, administer drops, ointments, and apply dressings.
• Measure prescription glasses (refractometry) and eye pressure (tonometry).
• Support minor surgical procedures, intraocular injections, laser treatments, and prepare patients for sterile procedures.
• Maintain ophthalmic instruments, ensure inventory of supplies, and uphold infection control standards.

Required profile

• Specialized Diploma in Medical Assistant/Administrative Medical Assistant or related ophthalmic experience.
• At least 1 year of medical office or ophthalmic experience.
• Ability to adapt to constant change in a healthcare setting.
• Knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification for Pennsylvania.

Required skills
