Executive Underwriter / AVP Underwriting Director – E&S Primary Casualty

About the role

Zurich E&S is seeking an experienced Casualty Underwriter or AVP Underwriting Director to join its growing E&S Casualty team. The role is hybrid, allowing flexibility while requiring market‑facing interaction with brokers, agents, and national wholesalers to drive profitable growth.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain relationships with broker partners and customers across all industries.
• Assess risk, evaluate exposure, and price policies to build a profitable book of new and renewal business.
• Collaborate with claims, finance, risk engineering, actuarial, and technical underwriting teams.
• Use market‑facing, negotiation, and interpersonal skills to grow relationships with preferred distribution partners in an assigned territory.
• Coach and develop junior team members while adhering to underwriting rules, regulations, and rating manuals.

Required profile

• High School Diploma or equivalent with 5+ years (underwriting/market‑facing) or 10+ years (claims/underwriting support) experience, or Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with relevant experience.
• For AVP level, 7+ years (underwriting/market‑facing) or 14+ years (claims/underwriting support) experience, or equivalent apprenticeship credentials.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent E&S commercial insurance experience is preferred.

Required skills

• Technical knowledge of primary and excess casualty underwriting across E&S market segments.
• Advanced acumen in habitational, hospitality, and special events industry segments.
• Established wholesale broker relationships.
• Creative problem‑solving and strong verbal/written communication.
