Communications Manager

About the role

Essie Justice Group is looking for a strategic and highly motivated Communications Manager to shape and amplify its Black‑feminist, abolitionist narrative. The role will drive storytelling, digital campaigns, and graphic collateral that advance the organization’s decarceration agenda and support its diverse community of women with incarcerated loved ones.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and steward messaging that elevates Essie’s brand, Black‑feminist and abolitionist perspective.
• Lead a small communications team (1–2 staff) focused on content and digital strategy.
• Design and execute content and messaging strategies across all platforms and channels.
• Oversee social‑media, content, and digital strategies, ensuring consistent brand voice.
• Manage creation and distribution of print and electronic publications, including emails, programmatic collateral, and donor outreach materials.
• Coordinate visual assets and work with graphic designers, photographers, and videographers.
• Design or supervise the design of Essie‑branded swag and other promotional items.

• Strong narrative sense – able to spot and seize cultural and digital opportunities.
• Confident leader who can manage a small team and external creative partners.
