Certified Ophthalmic Assistant

About the role

The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant supports ophthalmology providers by performing preliminary eye examinations, diagnostic testing, and assisting with procedures. This position is integral to delivering high‑quality eye care within Lehigh Valley Health Network's Fogelsville health center.

Key responsibilities

• Obtain intraocular pressures, visual acuities, and conduct slit‑lamp examinations.
• Perform automated and manual tests including refractions, keratometry, corneal topography, pachymetry, tonometry, and confrontation visual fields.
• Administer topical eye drops and ointments per physician order or protocol.
• Transcribe exam findings into the electronic medical record as dictated by the physician.
• Assist with minor surgeries, intraocular injections, and laser treatments, including patient preparation and instrument sterilization.
• Review patient charts before exams to anticipate needed supplies and equipment.
• Maintain equipment inventory and ensure proper sterilization of surgical instruments.

Required profile

• High School Diploma or GED.
• At least 1 year of experience as an ophthalmology assistant or medical assistant.
• Familiarity with medical terminology, HIPAA regulations, and patient rights.
• Basic computer proficiency with medical management applications.

Required skills

• Proficiency in performing slit‑lamp exams, tonometry, and various ocular imaging tests.
• Ability to administer eye medications and assist with intraocular injections and laser procedures.
• Knowledge of eye anatomy, ocular conditions, and operation of ophthalmic equipment.
• Competence in documenting patient findings in electronic health records.
