About the role

The University of Arkansas seeks a tenure‑track Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering focusing on advanced materials characterization using electron microscopy, starting August 2027. The position is part of a cluster hire coordinated by the Arkansas Materials Institute.

Key responsibilities

  • Conduct high‑resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR‑TEM) research and publish peer‑reviewed results.
  • Teach core mechanical engineering courses for undergraduate and graduate programs.
  • Collaborate with faculty across departments and contribute to departmental service.

Required profile

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field by start date.
  • Demonstrated research record with publications involving HR‑TEM.
  • Potential to develop an externally funded, collaborative research program.

Required skills

  • High‑resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR‑TEM)
  • Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS)
  • Selected area electron diffraction (SAED)
  • Fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis of TEM images
  • Focused ion beam (FIB) specimen preparation
