Assistant Operations Manager – Marine Operations

About the role

Join APM Terminals Elizabeth, a key gateway on the U.S. East Coast, as an Assistant Operations Manager – Marine. You will support safe, accurate, and efficient vessel cargo operations in a high‑volume terminal environment.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and distribute cost‑efficient vessel stowage plans using Navis N4/XPS and related planning tools.
• Supervise foremen, headers, the chief clerk and other labor in compliance with OSHA, union contracts and collective bargaining agreements.
• Lead gangway safety talks, inspect vessels, report deficiencies and investigate incidents.
• Monitor production counts and delays via Terminal Operating System data and Power BI dashboards, addressing constraints promptly.
• Ensure containers are loaded according to plan, oversee lashing, hazardous cargo documentation and reefer manifests.
• Plan and approve heavy‑lift gear, coordinate sailing times with vessel agents and line handlers, and produce operational statements and shift reports.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field and at least three years of transportation, stevedoring or equivalent military experience.
• Strong managerial, supervisory, decision‑making and stakeholder‑influencing abilities.
• Experience working in a unionized ILA/Longshore environment is strongly preferred.
• Willingness to work variable schedules, including 12‑hour rotating shifts, evenings, weekends and holidays.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Navis N4/XPS and vessel stowage/planning tools.
• Ability to interpret operational data and Power BI dashboards.
• TWIC card and Port Access Card approval (or ability to obtain).
• Competent rigger qualification (preferred).
