Tribal Police Chief

About the role

The Tribal Police Chief leads the Tribal Police Department, ensuring public safety, tribal sovereignty, and community well‑being. This senior position oversees all operations, builds partnerships, and promotes culturally‑responsive policing.

Key responsibilities

• Provide leadership and oversight for all department operations, including patrol, investigations, strategic planning, budgeting, grant management, and policy compliance.
• Build strong partnerships with tribal, local, state, and federal agencies; represent the department at community and inter‑agency meetings.
• Promote community‑oriented policing and ensure staff development, professional standards, and accountability.

Required profile

• 5–10 years of progressive law‑enforcement leadership experience, preferably in Alaska.
• Previous command‑level experience (Lieutenant, Captain, Deputy Chief, or Chief) preferred.
• Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Management, or related field preferred; or equivalent experience.
• Demonstrated ability to build trust, lead diverse teams, and collaborate with multiple partners.

Required skills

• Strong leadership, organizational, analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ability to learn new records and case‑management systems.
