Principal Data Engineer, Biologics Discovery

About the role

Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine is seeking a Principal Data Engineer to lead the design and delivery of AI‑ready discovery data products for the Biologics Discovery organization. The role bridges scientific workflows, data consumers, and technology partners to ensure high‑quality, governed data that supports research, analytics, and machine learning.

Key responsibilities

• Design and deliver scalable discovery data products, schemas, and integration pipelines that enable AI, ML, and insight generation across Biologics Discovery.
• Translate scientific and analytical requirements into data product specifications, contracts, and acceptance criteria in partnership with scientists and AI/ML teams.
• Establish and champion data standards, quality, provenance, lineage, and metadata practices, applying FAIR principles to ensure data is reusable and interoperable.
• Collaborate with enterprise Data Strategy, Architecture, and Platform teams to align discovery data with enterprise standards and drive long‑term interoperability.

Required profile

• Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering or related field with 8+ years (BSc) / 5+ years (MSc) / 3+ years (PhD) experience in data product design within pharma, biotech or life‑sciences.
• Proven technical leadership through architecture reviews, mentorship, and delivery of complex cross‑functional initiatives.
• Strong communication skills to represent the team in architecture and strategy forums.
