Phlebotomist

About the role

Optum NY/NJ, part of UnitedHealth Group, is looking for a Phlebotomist in Newburgh, NY. The role performs venipuncture and capillary puncture on adults, neonates and pediatric patients, collects urine specimens, processes lab specimens and helps train new personnel. It is a 37.5-hour week, Monday to Friday 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, with rotating Saturdays 8:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Key responsibilities

• Perform routine phlebotomy, including adult and pediatric venipuncture with vacutainer, syringe and butterfly techniques, and capillary punctures with heel and fingerstick methods
• Distinguish sample types and follow the order of draw, verify patient demographics with two identifiers, and label specimens correctly
• Obtain finger sticks, instruct patients on urine and stool collection, and enter accessioning data into the computer
• Prepare specimens for send-out testing, inventory supplies and set up phlebotomy stations
• Travel to other draw stations (Monroe, Middletown, Rock Hill, West Nyack) and troubleshoot LIS issues with the LIS team
• Work as a team member with physicians, nurses and ancillary staff, maintaining patient confidentiality and providing courteous customer service

Required profile

• High school graduate or equivalent
• Phlebotomy certification
• Available to work rotating Saturdays
• Reliable transportation to draw stations
• Preferred: 6 months of blood-drawing experience, 1+ year of phlebotomy experience, previous laboratory experience, and pediatric phlebotomy experience

Required skills

• Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office and solid computer skills
• Knowledge of infection control, aseptic technique and use of PPE
• Communication, teamwork, time management and multitasking abilities
